Ohlins Damper Servicing
In order to continue the high level of performance achieved by your Ohlins damper, it is recomended that they are serviced as often as once a year.
As dampers and forks are worked up and down their stroke, they force fluid through internal valves under pressure to absorb inputs and create just the right amount of positive pressure to maintain a contact patch between the tyre & the ground. This gives the fluid a hard life, being constantly ‘sheered’ and the friction being converted into heat. Over time this tends to break down the structure of the oil first then the performance of valves and so the damping fades.
Typically, the damper will be removed from your Lotus, de-gassed, drained and stripped down. Once in this condition the parts will be cleaned and inspected for wear. At this point, all seals and sliding bushes will be replaced. The damper is then re-filled with the correct fluid specified by Ohlins using a specialist vacuum rig to ensure that no air remain trapped inside. It is then re-gassed with nitrogen before being tested on a Roehrig damper dynamometer to ensure that it is working correctly and matched to any other dampers being serviced. It is recomended that all four dampers are serviced together but on the same axle at the very minimum.
The dyno is a vital part of the suspension workshop. It basically cranks the damper through a set stroke at different shaft speeds to measure the amount of resistance it gives in compression & rebound directions at each speed. From this we can check for consistency & that the figures are correct for the application. This also gives us the ability to check the rate of springs if required.
